Though by conventional standards their marriage was tumultuous and rife with drug use, Cobain is quoted as saying, "I'm married and I'm more attracted to Courtney than I ever have been toward a person."
1991-1994
Before Courtney Love's current career as a tabloid-attracting car wreck, she was better known as the front woman of actually-quite-good grunge outfit Hole and most infamously, the partner of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. Possessing both the enigmatic chemistry of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's relationship and the manic drug-fuelled downward spiral of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen, Kurt and Courtney's relationship was both inspired and desperately tragic.
The pair met at a concert in 1991 just as Nirvana were being catapulted from obscurity to multi-platinum megastar status and married a year later when Courtney became pregnant with their daughter, Francis Bean.
Though Kurt and Courtney seemed to stimulate musical creativity in each other (Kurt is rumoured to have given a helping hand with the song writing of Hole's excellent
Live Through This album, while Courtney inspired the twisted Nirvana classic 'Heart Shaped Box'), off the stage and out of the studio their life was a mess.
Love was accused of using heroin during her pregnancy and Cobain's drug problem swung out of control as he tried to cope with fame and a chronic stomach ulcer. Then Cobain had an unsuccessful suicide attempt in Europe and back home in Seattle was cautioned by police after Love called them when the couple had a domestic dispute. Finally, after checking out of rehab and with Courtney busy promoting the upcoming Hole album, Cobain shot himself dead at his own home on April 8, 1994.
Though by conventional standards their marriage was tumultuous and rife with drug use, Cobain is quoted as saying, "I'm married and I'm more attracted to Courtney than I ever have been toward a person."
In the eyes of many Nirvana fans, Courtney was Yoko to Kurt's Lennon, but while Lennon's fans may have resented Yoko, they never blamed her for his death. This was not the case with Love, who in the years after Kurt's death has suffered abuse and accusations from fans who thought she, directly or indirectly, killed her husband. Fellow musicians have also been on the anti-Courtney crusade. Former Nirvana member Dave Grohl is openly hostile to her and the Tori Amos song 'Professional Widow' is rumoured to be about her as well.
