“Sometimes I feel like I’m a bit sick of it,” he told NME . “My inbox, on any given day, has at least five covers or parodies or remixes of it and there’s only so many times you can listen to the one song."
Considering it has been almost a year since the song was released in Australia, ‘Somebody’ has had plenty of time to amass a long list of covers and remixes.
“I like the fact that people are still discovering it and I don’t feel like it’s a noose around my neck,” he explained.
“But at the same time, I do wonder how many times you can listen to the same piece of music. I can't think of any song that's ever been picked up like this and I do feel like saying to people sometimes 'Come on guys, there are other songs out there'.”
‘Somebody’ shot to Number 1 in the US last month, the song’s popularity was boosted after being covered on Glee. But Gotye slammed the rendition, saying it sounded “dinky and wrong” and “like it's playing to you from a cardboard box”.
Will all the exposure he’s received from this turn him from writing more music? Will he write another hit track like ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’?
"I don't know … Time will tell,” he said.
”I don't know whether I can or whether I want to."
Doesn’t sound like good news for the masses of Gotye fans. We hope he doesn’t become somebody that we used to know!
