If you're like us, you were probably singing along to every hit British song performed at the London Olympics closing ceremony last night … except for that song by George Michael that you'd never even heard before.

The British music legend has been widely criticised for using the Olympics as an opportunity to promote his new single.

Watch: George Michael performs at the Olympic closing ceremony.

George followed up his performance of 'Freedom' (we all know the words to that one) with his new tune 'White Light' — leaving a whole stadium full of people awkwardly tapping their toes because they couldn't sing along.

The song choice has sparked outrage on Twitter, with British TV presenter Richard Bacon tweeting, "I'm calling for a judge led, full public inquiry into George Michael's second song-gate."

Subsequent tweet-rage has made George and his new single a trending topic on Twitter.

Publicity mission: accomplished!
