Forget 'Party Rockers' and 'Call Me Maybe'. Get ready for 'Gangnam Style'.
Racking up nearly 48 million YouTube streams, beating Justin Bieber's 'As Long as You Love Me' and Katy Perry's 'Wide Awake' to number one on the US iTunes chart, and spawning internet cover versions and flash mobs, this surprise Korean crossover pop hit is the music sensation of the moment.
South Korean singer PSY (real name Park Jae-Sang) has become an overnight international sensation with his bizarre-but-amazing 'Gangnam Style' clip, in which he does a "horse dance" in toilets, saunas, elevators, carparks and even a horse stable. Watch above to see him in 'Gangnam' action.
English-speaking fans have latched onto the quirky singer's fashion, dance moves and the 'Gangnam' lyrics, which contain just one line in English: "Hey, sexy lady!"
Described by the Global Post as the love child of "Kim Jong Un and Lady Gaga", PSY didn't know the song would be such a smash hit (he's onto his sixth album in Korea).
"The YouTube video never targeted [at] foreign countries. It was for local fans," PSY told Reuters.
"My goal in this music video was to look uncool until the end. I achieved it."
So what does 'Gangnam Style' actually mean?
It's a send-up of a hipster district called "Gangnam" in South Korea's capital city, Seoul.
"It's like Beverly Hills of Korea," PSY told ABC News in the US.
"But the guy doesn't look like Beverly Hills. Dance doesn't look like Beverly Hills. ... And the situation in [the] music video doesn't look like Beverly Hills. But he keeps saying 'I'm Beverly Hills' style. So that's the point. It's sort of a twist."
The rough English translation is, "Girls, your big brother is Gangnam Style". Here are some of the other translated lyrical highlights:
A girl who looks quiet but plays when she plays
A girl who puts her hair down when the right time comes
A girl who covers herself but is more sexy than a girl who bares it all
A sensible girl like that
I'm a guy
A guy who seems calm but plays when he plays
A guy who goes completely crazy when the right time comes
A guy who has bulging ideas rather than muscles
That kind of guy
PSY has taken off especially in the US. Katy Perry tweeted on Tuesday to her 25 million followers, "Help, I'm in a Gangman-style K-hole".
PSY responded enthusiastically: "@KatyPerry Hi ... I'm the very 'PSY' of the video. K K. This is a huge pleasure to be introduced by U!!! Please follow me if possible! K K."
He's even met with Justin Bieber's manager Scooter Braun to discuss producing a US version of his album featuring 'Gangnam Style'. And Nelly Furtado has covered the song at one of her shows it's that big.
But 'Gangnam' craziness in the US reached new levels on Monday night. PSY stopped thousands of baseball fans when he appeared on the screen at a Los Angeles Dodgers game. He performed his "rodeo hop" to a rapturous reaction:
PSY has postponed his Japanese tour to conquer the world instead. It's only a matter of time before PSY fever takes over Down Under.
