They say never judge a book by its cover, but what about the fourth album from an iconic indie rock band?
Channeling Nirvana’s iconic Nevermind with a dash of '90s horror fiction Goosebumps, the artwork for Mosquito is, well, just ugly.
And their fans agree.
The band posted the cover art to Instagram two days ago and have had an outpouring of mostly negative feedback.
Comments range from “Creepy cover, awesome music”, to “Love the YYYs to death, but this album cover is awful”.
The designer is graphic artist Beomsik Shimbe Shim, maker of the award-winning animated short The Wonder Hosptial.
Perhaps it is meant to be ironic?
The band recently told Pitchfork that the album contains “the most tongue-in-cheek stuff that we've done in a while”.
“There's a song about alien invasion,” said lead singer Karen O. “And the title track, ‘Mosquito’, is literally about mosquitos. I'm surprised that there aren't more songs about them out there. I have a pretty passionate hatred of them.”
Hitting Australia this week for Big Day Out, Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ scary art is not the only new look that fans can expect from the band.
Frontwoman and fashion icon Karen O has bleached her trademark brown bob.
“I've only had blonde hair once in my life, for two weeks in my early '20s, and my mom never forgave me,” Karen told Pitchfork.
“But after years of trying to convince me, my friend and makeup artist Mike Potter did it over the summer. Then I realised a lot of other female lead singers had done it, too; it was a big trend. But I'm so lazy. I haven't even touched-up the roots.”
