Australian Idol: Top 6 - stage and screen

Australian Idol: Top 6 - stage and screen
Bye bye blondie
Image: Ten
ZOMG IT'S LIZA MINNELLI. I can't believe they convinced her to be a judge on Australian Idol. What a classy broad — Marcia is going to be completely out-diva'd tonight.

She opens the show with a performance of 'Cabaret' that is just on another level. I can't even begin to describe it, partly because I still can't quite believe I'm seeing Liza Minnelli on our little show.

While I'm blinking the stars out of my eyes, Andrew G introduces the bottom three: Kate, Hayley and Kim. Kate is safe first, leaving Hayley in the bottom two — which is kind of a surprise. Luckily she's safe, and Kim is (finally) outta here.

The theme of this episode is "stage and screen", meaning the Idols can sing any song that's ever been used in any movie or musical. Which is pretty much every song.

Toby Moulton

'Somebody To Love'
Meh. I'm bored to Toby, and this is a terrible and flat version of a classic song. (I much preferred the version on the recent episode of Glee). The arrangement is all over the place, and it's totally void of any actual emotion. Blech. Bizarrely, the judges seem to love it. Even Liza seems to love it. Were they listening to a completely different performance?

'Exit Music'
Another Radiohead ballad. Okay, Radiohead = amazing and brilliant. Toby singing Radiohead, like, every other week = snoozefest. I fall asleep midway through, but somehow the audience manages to stay away till the end. Marcia and Liza both declare it "sexy", while JD says he's sick of hearing Radiohead songs... prompting a spat with Dicko that lasts until Liza basically tells them both to cram it. SHE RULES.

Stan Walker

'Circle of Life'
I'm going to be honest: I've never cared much for Stan. There, I said it. This performance does not get off to a good start — he's mumbling, and the opening verses are kind of dull. It doesn't pick up until he gets to the big notes near the end. Marcia praises his versatility and lack of fear, JD declares that Stan is "a star", while (as usual) only Dicko is on the ball, comparing the first half of the song to "wading through custard".

'We Will Rock You'
This song crackles with energy and a pounding beat, so it's pretty much impossible to muck it up. The audience goes wild for it. JD says Stan "brought R&B to rock", while Dicko declares it to be "ghetto fabulous". "It was a powerhouse coming at us," Liza adds, "and you were leading it."

Kate Cook

'Son Of A Preacher Man'
I think I get why Kate was in the bottom three this week. Lately she's been lacking something — it's like she's not enjoying herself anymore. Honestly, I feel like this is the same thing we've seen from Kate a million times already. Liza thinks Kate is frightened to be theatrical, and wants her to work on that, while JD wishes she'd listened to Liza's advice a little more to make her performance a little more believable. Dicko lays it out: "you've lost your up-tempo mojo".

'Make You Feel My Love'
This is just not Kate's week — the singing is fine, but it's just more of the same from her. She needs to offer us something new, I think, because she's going over old ground. Still, I agree with Dicko that this is her better performance tonight — he praises her "honesty and vulnerability". Marcia and Liza both thought it was a great performance, so maybe you had to be in the studio to fully appreciate it.

Hayley Warner

'These Days'
Not Hayley's best work, I have to say — based solely on this performance, she deserved bottom two tonight. She seems stiff up onstage, and there's not a lot of oomph in her voice. A disappointed JD says it didn't "get out of first gear", and Dicko agrees it lacked energy. Marcia, of course, offers some uplifting but meaningless fluff, while Liza says she's going to wait till Hayley's second performance before offering her verdict.

'Oh What A Night'
When Hayley announces that she's offering a "stripped-back" version of this classic, alarm bells go off — some songs should not be stripped back. However, the result is surprisingly delightful: it's smooth, unusual, and really works for her voice. That's more like it. The judges all praise the arrangement, though JD isn't sure that this late stage of the competition is the right time for experimentation. Ugh, that is such a boring and corporate thing to say. Experiment away, Hayley!

James Johnston

'You’ll Never Walk Alone'
First: THANK GOD JAMES WASN'T IN THE BOTTOM THREE THIS WEEK. I'm rooting for him to win, even though I agree with Dicko that's he's a tad too young to pull off a song like this. I don't, however, agree with the harsh tone of Dicko's criticism. Liza, meanwhile, thinks James pulled it off despite his age and appearance. "I totally bought it," she says. Aww. She's so sweet, you guys.

'Crazy Little Thing Called Love'
This is the kind of fun, energetic song James does really well. Like, in a couple of years, when he's really matured as a performer, he'll be someone to look out for. "You can really sing!" Liza gushes when he's done, though she cautions that she wants more "intention" from him. I assume she means sexual intention, though to be fair, James is only about 12 years old. Dicko thinks James has all the right parts to be a star, but doesn't know how to use them properly yet.

Nathan Brake

'Thriller'
Great song choice — an over-the-top tune for an over-the-top performer. Unfortunately the performance is missing something, and that something is crazy dance moves. You can't do 'Thriller' without the arm movements. Marcia found it "exciting", while Liza declares it "gangbusters". Hee! She is so cute. JD, who's chuffed that Nathan has finally cut his hair, says "It's not filler, it's 'Thriller'." Gosh, JD, I hope you didn't spend too much time thinking that one up.

'Music Of The Night'
Massive respect to Nathan for 1) choosing a song from an actual musical, unlike almost all the other Idols, and 2) choosing something so ambitious. This is a huge number, and while Nathan doesn't mess it up he doesn't quite do it justice. The judges, however, are ecstatic: JD says he "brought the house down", Dicko thought it was "the curtain-closer we deserve", while Liza offers some jibber-jabber about taking a walk. Which means she loved it (I think).

Thank you, Liza Minnelli, you were amazing.

My pick: I'm predicting that Kate's number will be up next week. But honestly, at this stage of the competition it could be pretty much anyone — maybe I'll get lucky and Toby will get the boot.

TOBY IS SOOOOOOOOO BORING, sometimes i feel like falling asleep i dread his stupid performances, whocares if hes good looking? hayley is great, and stan is the man! never likes james until this week.. he actually has a good voice and man does nathan have vocal cords !!
I loved Nathan this week =] he's not usually a favourite of mine. Considering he had to cut down Music of the Night to a performance that goes for 1 minutes i thought it was fantastic, and as you pointed out, a song from an actual musical! Love reading these posts =] keep up the good work. I don't dislike Toby, but i still don't think he is as good as Hayley, Nathan, James or Stan.
Kate should go next. James reminds me of a young Ricky Nelson in looks and mannerisms. He has a truck load of potential. (Marcia and DIcko will know who that is -- was) Grab them young, train them..... Toby is all class, shy and retiring and lacking in confidence, but another Bouble.... if he wants to be... go for it Tody, be proud of the person you are. There is a minority of class in this world. Anyone can be trash. Damien Leith was a dark horse toooo Toby....... Hayley change your image a tad, you have potential. Stan has a good voice, but wont sell CDs. Nathan, is a tad mmmmmm questionable for me. But he is likable. Its going to be interesting.....
Whats wrong with you all guys!!! Not only Toby is good looking(he could be my James Bond anytime) a great voice! an absolute debonair...he's got the package!! Looks got a lot to do with being a singer when your out there...go toby, go toby....GOODLUCK!!!!
Fingers crossed Toby is voted off this week, he is very irritating, unsettling and strange.
this years idol is not good! the only person who is amazing is HAYLEY! love her XD hope she wins!
toby rocks! the only one with a decent taste in music, hope nathan or stan go next week.
kate and toby need to go. i really don't know whos voting for toby, he's not up with the others. and kate used to be great. now its boring. loving stan, james, nathan.
i want toby to leave NOW....please
its just going downheel, it needs to be stopped!! kim was my fav, the only decent looking one out of this seasons bunch, and now that she is gone will no longer be watching the rest. but i will still read these posts i think, theyre quite amusing.

Australian Idol: 2009 grand finale MusicFIX Blog by Sam Nov 22 2009 10:24PM It's that time of year again: another Australian Idol finale at the Sydney Opera House. And thank effing god. We don't have to watch this gas-bag of a show... until it returns to the airwaves in 2010. Oh. Goody.

The very last episode (yay!) begins with a choir comprised of people I've never seen before and therefore don't care about. They're surrounding by screaming attendees, who I feel sorry for for two reasons. First, way to waste an evening. Second, it's BLOODY HOT in Sydney right now. I hope they're all wearing deodorant.

The choir leads into the top 12's performance of 'Don't Stop Me Now', a tune that makes me think of Shaun of the Dead. Too bad there's no ravenous zombie hoards present. Aww, look, there's Casey. And Sabrina and her over-trained voice. And Dreamy Tim and Pretty Kim. And Kate! It's Scott and his currant eyes, and quitter Toby, and chubby Nathan. And James, my favourite!

The final two, Stan and Hayley, emerge to finish off the song. I hafta admit: judged on voice alone, Stan deserves to win. Chatting to Andrew G after the performance, he declares the finale is "sew wucked". Gotta love Kiwi accents. Or not.

The judges are allowed a few seconds to speak, even though they literally have no purpose anymore, before Michael Buble struts out singing 'Feeling Good'. He's joined by Stan — singing in his absurd lower register, which always makes him sound like he's cruelly imitating special people — and Hayley, whose voice has an interesting timbre to it.

Then, for some reason, a woolly homeless man is allowed onstage, and — hey, wait a minute! That's Wes Carr, the guy who won in 2008, performing 'Beat It' with Cold Chisel rocker Ian Moss. Andrew G, who needs to be a hilarious bitch more often, snipes at Wes about playing at the Rooty Hill RSL the previous night. MEGA BURN!

Then it's time for the next stage in this bloatarama: the top 12's girls shout-sing their version of 'When Loves Take Over'. Hey, remember Ashleigh Toole? Me neither. Though I do remember how much I loathe Sabrina. Ugh. Afterwards there's a montage of all the celebs who've mentored the contestants this season, which makes me wish wish wish that Liza Minelli will be a full-time judge next year. If not her, then at least Suzi Quatro. Either of them can replace JD and I'll be happy.

Actual pop star Mika is allowed to perform. He does two songs, and between them there's this embarrassingly staged bit where "fans" in the crowd "spontaneously" demand that he do 'We Are Golden'. He obliges, accompanied by the episode's first round of fireworks. Gosh, it sure is lucky there just happened to be cameras and microphones to capture those spontaneous fans, right?

Andrew G announces that the finale is sponsored by an anti-binge drinking campaign (ironic, given that I need several stiff drinks to ensure this), then introduces the next performance by Ricki-Lee. She does a song from the deodorant commercial that's been playing all season, which I've only just realised is her actual song. Oops. Ricki is reminding me of Britney Spears's concert, which is not a compliment.

Since the top 12's girls got a turn, it's only fair that the boys also get a go. They're singing something by Snow Patrol, which: most boring song choice in the world. I forgot Casey existed till now, and will likely forget about him again in about two seconds. Tim is still mega-dreamy (someone give him a job as an underwear model, stat!), while Scott's arm is in plaster for some reason.

Andrew G says that voting has now closed. Unfortunately, this is not a sign that the show is about to end. There's still eight more hours to go. At least the next bit is a performance by the original (and still the best) Idol, Guy Sebastian, who sings a duet with Jordin Sparks. Only not, since she has appendicitis and couldn't make it to Australia, so instead Guy's singing a duet with a video clip of her. Which is actually kinda neat.

More fireworks. (Sydney Harbour is so beeyootiful.) More Buble. More fireworks.

The next half-hour of the show is devoted to lengthy recaps of Hayley's and Stan's "journeys" in Australian Idol. Since I'm nowhere near as cruel as the Idol producers, I'll spare you the bloated details. Suffice to say that Hayley sings 'Funhouse' and Stan sings 'It's a Man's World' — it would've been nice if they'd actually sung something new, but it's not to be. Stan tells us that he feels "blissed".

Then, finally, it's the moment we've all been waiting for: the winner is announced. (Actually the moment I've been waiting for is the end credits. But this will do for now.) The judges offer their final useless words. There are pre-recorded messages from all the mentors. Then, Andrew G reveals that the winner is...

Stan.

Shrug. Good for him. Looking genuinely stunned, he thanks God and "Noo Zellund". Then he sings 'Black Box', and once again I wish he had a better winners' single. There's around round of fireworks, and then... and then... and then...

THE END CREDITS IDOL IS OVER YAAAAAY!

So. The big question: will Stan last? I'm going to say yes, because history tells us that male Idol winners always do better than the females (see: Casey Donovan, Kate DeAraugo, Natalie Gauci. Who? Exactly). Unlikely best case scenario: Stan's best mate Michael Buble will help his career. Probable best case scenario: the kid will wind up at Rooty Hill RSL.

Did Stan deserve to win? Will he have a career? Sound off in the comments!

New video: it's all about Hugh Sheridan MusicFIX Blog by Sam Nov 20 2009 2:29PM Off the heels of his debut 'Just Can't Throw Us Away' comes Hugh Sheridan's follow-up 'All About Me' — and MusicFIX is giving you the first look at the new song.

We gotta say: Hugh's is looking pretty fine in the clip, which dumps him in the desert (in trendy aviator sunnies) where he's rescued/stalked by a woman I can only assume is a massive Packed to the Rafters fan.

Keep an eye out for the blink-and-you'll-miss-it shirtlessness:

'All About Me' is from Hugh's album Speak Love, which releases on November 27.

Music Review: Foo Fighters & Robbie Williams MusicFIX Blog by Jade Nov 19 2009 3:11PM

Single review: Robbie Williams - Bodies

Robbie's appeal lies in the chorus. 'Rock DJ', 'Let Me Entertain You', 'Angels' - a verse is just a means to a middle for Mr. Williams. His last album lost the chorus and truckloads of fans along the way.

Bodies the new single off of his seventh album 'Reality Killed the Video Star' was a perfect choice to piggyback a comeback on. The fuzzy guitars and synth beats do a damn fine job of building interest till we reach the main event and Robbie's voice bursts through, bringing with it the memory of just how catchy and fun he can be.

Admittedly the choir and the string section are a little naff and it's definitely no monster hit like 'Rock DJ'. Still it is a pretty slice of pop pleasure from someone who unlike 'Take That' you aren't embarrassed to admit you listen too. You will like it if: You're in need of a new karaoke tune.

Album review: Foo Fighters – Greatest Hits

The Foo's are the gateway band for the next generation (not sure what letter of the alphabet that is). They are the band every 13 year old first turns too when they are on the cusp of realising there is more to music than the Top 40. Easy listening with just enough edge and cred to ease the transition into some harder sounding stuff.

Everyone remembers their first, it always maintains a slight rosy coloured special sheen, and it's why a decade later grown up kids get misty eyed when 'Monkey Wrench' suddenly appears on a shuffle playlist. It's why record companies are cynically smart enough to release a Greatest Hits album just before stockings must be stuffed in time for Christmas.

While the obligatory two new songs tacked on the end - 'Wheels' and 'Word Forward' won't make it to 'Greatest Hits Vol. 2', the CD serves its purpose as you find yourself discovering or dusting off their old albums.
