Australian Idol: Top 4 - Noughties

Australian Idol: Top 4 - Noughties
Um, is he giving us the finger?
Image: Ten
This episode kicks off with a shocking moment, which is itself shocking in a season that's generally been pretty ho-hum: Toby has decided to pull out of the competition! Because he's more passionate about schoolteaching than he is about a career in the music industry. I suspect the real reason he's dropped out is because he's run out of a droopy British ballads to sing.

Andrew G reveals that, had Toby not departed, James would have been eliminated this week. All I can say to that is: phew. James is one of the few things keeping me in the show.

Meanwhile, the weeping judges praise Toby the Australian Hero for his noble decision to quit a televised singing contest. Such bravery! I'm getting a little sniffly myself.

Get the full story on Toby's departure at TVFIX.

Anyway. Tonight's guest judges and mentors are Benji and Joel Madden from Good Charlotte, presiding over this Noughties-themed episode. (After 10 years, I still reckon "Noughties" is the dumbest decade name ever.) Joel and Benji are identical(-ish) twins who both have hats and tats, so it's likely that at some point in this recap I will mix them up. Deal with it.

Nathan, 'Closer'
Nathan dedicates this performance to Toby the Australian Hero, which is a bit of a burn given it's such a bad song choice. Pitchiness runs rampant — the kid's voice never quite sits on the notes. Dicko declares it "a slice of pop genius that's out of [Nathan's] depth", which I agree with even though it's a mixed metaphor. Marcia, who's wearing absurb pigtails, dubs it "dynamite", while Joe reckons Nathan "brought the sexy".

Before the next performance there is a ridiculously dull segment recapping some guy who won some Idol competition. Thank god I have a DVR so I can fast-forward through padding BS like this.

James, 'Daughters'
It makes me sick James could have gone home tonight, because he is the best one left: great song, great performance. The only downside are the hideously lame back-up singers. Marcia thinks James might be a bit young to pull off that song, while JD agrees that he didn't care for the song choice. (Then again, trying to please JD is like trying to make ice on the sun.) Benji adds that James has "a lot of potential".

Stan, 'Let Me Love You'
It's a great song for him, though it's not my cup of tea. Stan actually does look kind of out of breath singing it, so maybe he really should heed JD's advice about getting on a treadmill. Speaking of JD: he loved it, though as always he has problems with it. Joel and Benji are both enamoured with Stan, for some reason, though Dicko reckons it was a performance more suited to a daggy disco and accuses Stan of "treading water".

Hayley, 'Heavy Cross'
I saw Hayley in the flesh last week. She's surprisingly tall. Anyway, I really really want to love this performance (when James is inevitably eliminated next week, she will become my new favourite), but it's missing something — maybe you have to be a fat lesbian to make it work. Joel can't believe Hayley is only 17, but Dicko doesn't think she engaged with the song: "It's like Beth Ditto's undies," he says, "a bit big for you." HA! JD makes a valid point about Hayley's hand, which she always holds up in a weird stiff claw while she's singing, though a surprisingly harsh Marcia warns him not to bring that up. I guess because teen girls are sensitive about their hand-claws?

Nathan, 'Red'
This is the second week in a row Nathan has pulled out two mediocre performances — frankly, I'm not feeling it, even though Nathan is literally tearing up by the end. Lame. (Also, he's wearing a T-shirt and cardigan combo that makes him look totally pudgy, which isn't helping.) Benji liked it better than Nathan's first performance, which isn't much of a compliment, while Dicko reckons Nathan is overextending his voice. JD adds some valid points, but he is so relentlessly critical that I can't really take him seriously as a judge. (And yes, I realise that me accusing someone of relentless criticism is pot, kettle, and all that. Shut up.)

In between performances we're offered a sneak peek at Avatar, because an upcoming sci-fi blockbuster has so much in common with Australian Idol.

James, 'This Is How A Heart Breaks'
I think I have to be realistic and prepare for James's elimination next week. Sigh. He's really great here, though I do see what the judges mean when they point out how young he is — sometimes James's very boyish look does almost work against him. Dicko thinks James did a great job at pulling off such a well-known song, while JD enjoyed it but thinks the boy is yet to bring the house down.

Stan, 'The Climb'
Kudos to Stan for such an unusual song choice. Ultimately, though, it's merely good, and not great. Stan starts off the song in his mumble low register — he sounds like Homer Simpson, which isn't a good thing, and I feel like we've seen him do this type of emotive power-ballad so many times that it's lost its impact. Marcia says she's "lost for words", but then describes it as "sublime". JD says he has "nothing to say but 'sensational'", and then blathers on for several more minutes. Proof that the judges really don't listen to the stuff that comes out of their mouths.

Hayley, 'I Don't Care'
Not sure about the song choice, but Hayley does a rockin' job with it. There are some bits where she's a bit stiff, but she's young and she's awesome, so I forgive her for it. For once JD has nothing negative to say, only dropping in a joke criticism that she didn't crowd-surf. Joel reckons that Fall Out Boy would be happy with Hayley's rendition of her song, while Benji adds that she "killed it". Marcia praises Hayley for managing to make it all the way through the show even though Toby quit at the start. Huh? Someone leaves Idol every week. Is Toby's departure really that different to a regular elimination?

Proving that whoever is running Idol is a bonehead, the show ends with an acoustic performance from Good Charlotte of their song 'Dance Floor Anthem'. The end of a bloated two-hour show is not, in my mind, the best time for a celebrity performance.

My picks: Hate to say it, but I reckon James is outta here next time.

toby was ok but not good. he read it right- he would've have gone home eventually. something about his personality always struck me as 'awkward'. i don't think trying to play tall, dark and handsome was really working for me. maybe for all the old single ladies it was. on the other hand, don't kick james- he's great! he and hayley are the only two keeping this competition alive. although whoever wins this, i'm not sure to say if they will be able to keep their career alive. i mean, can anyone recall someone who's actually cracked an overseas market? i hardly remember any of the idols off this show anyway! they all end up trying to re-launch their careers off myspace. like casey whats her name? who the hell is she?!
Had to laugh at some of these comments. Hayley Warner is the only future superstar on this show, yet some who bag her then praise Stan's ridiculously overrated version of a Miley Cyrus song, or dont rate her and then in the same breath mention Jessica Mauboy as some kind of musical genius. Irony at its best. Hayley is above and beyond the star this year - and she will be the only one to make it anywhere when this years Idol wraps up. She is Australia's answer to female rock - something we have never really had. If only Aussies would support their own instead of letting America take over their ipods as well as their TV's.
Only good people to come out of idol were Wes Carr, Bobby Flynn and Lisa Mitchell. The last thing we need is another cardboard cut out pop star who can't write clogging our radios with even more ***.
Oh Toby Toby Toby, Sorry mate you had no chance. Seems to me you saw the writing on the wall and know people who have talent were voted off over you You've done the right thing leaving, I agreet, tell it like it is, without all a the puppy dog head hanging nobility. You never have had the type of talent Idol should be keeping. All the school mums and grandmums etc wouldve been voting you to stay. Thats why in the first place Idol isnt a fair competition, its a popularity contest, its not based on talent? that !ironically has less to do with it than who the audience choses? When the judges tell it like it is they get criticised by the audience! as for Idol it should be about the young ones, finding talent and nurturing the young vibe! (and I am on the other side of 40). Good Luck, reckon youd be an awesome teacher! and the system needs more of them like You!
After the first week of this snoozefest, I refused to watch Idol anymore, because this year's contestants all SUCK!! So I just wanted to thank you Sam, for allowing me to keep up with popular culture every week without actually having to sit through, as you aptly described it, a bloated two-hour show. None of the remaining four are good enough or old enough to win this competition and actually become a top-selling artist in the vein of Jessica Mauboy or Guy Sebastian. Australian Idol really needs to be taken off air for a few years so that we can give potential contestants a few years to age. We're scraping the bottom of the barrel. Kudos to Toby for realising he's better suited to Year 5 Music than to Aria Chart toppers. Thanks for the entertainment Sam. You make me laugh every week and your blog will be the only thing I miss at the end of the misery fest that is Australian Idol.
Toby's the biggest *** in oz today-wasting people's time & money when he didn't want it anyway!!Oh,he's so BRAVE & NOBLE leaving to let the others have the best chance to make it-WHAT???What about the 15 people that got knocked out before he decided he didn't want to do it anymore??I'm just so glad he's gone-i've been hoping & praying for it since the show began. No more of those smarmy, cheesy grins & choir boy-ish singing & pronunciation of songs!Hope he cops BIG backlash!Anyhoo...enough time has been wasted on him....i believe nathan should be the next to go...& jd please,if that's possible!! Nathan has had 2 mediocre weeks with pitch issues.Hayley has the energy & image happening, but i believe that's as deep as her appeal & talent goes.Vocals are often shoddy & those stoopid faces she pulls are annoying.Song choice tonight was spot on for her,but it was slower than the original & boring.Disappointing-i wanted to like it.Only stand out for me was Stan with his miley tune, suprisingly!
Sadness comes over me to know Toby has left, even though I don,t think he would win it but compared to Hayley who is so predictable at least you could understand what he was singing. My votes go to Nathan & Stan who are becoming more versatile with there songs. To me a good singer is one who does not sound monotonous. Come on judges don,t waste our time picking another no hoper that goes nowhere.

New video: it's all about Hugh Sheridan MusicFIX Blog by Sam Nov 20 2009 2:29PM Off the heels of his debut 'Just Can't Throw Us Away' comes Hugh Sheridan's follow-up 'All About Me' — and MusicFIX is giving you the first look at the new song.

We gotta say: Hugh's is looking pretty fine in the clip, which dumps him in the desert (in trendy aviator sunnies) where he's rescued/stalked by a woman I can only assume is a massive Packed to the Rafters fan.

Keep an eye out for the blink-and-you'll-miss-it shirtlessness:

'All About Me' is from Hugh's album Speak Love, which releases on November 27.

Music Review: Foo Fighters & Robbie Williams MusicFIX Blog by Jade Nov 19 2009 3:11PM

Single review: Robbie Williams - Bodies

Robbie's appeal lies in the chorus. 'Rock DJ', 'Let Me Entertain You', 'Angels' - a verse is just a means to a middle for Mr. Williams. His last album lost the chorus and truckloads of fans along the way.

Bodies the new single off of his seventh album 'Reality Killed the Video Star' was a perfect choice to piggyback a comeback on. The fuzzy guitars and synth beats do a damn fine job of building interest till we reach the main event and Robbie's voice bursts through, bringing with it the memory of just how catchy and fun he can be.

Admittedly the choir and the string section are a little naff and it's definitely no monster hit like 'Rock DJ'. Still it is a pretty slice of pop pleasure from someone who unlike 'Take That' you aren't embarrassed to admit you listen too. You will like it if: You're in need of a new karaoke tune.

Album review: Foo Fighters – Greatest Hits

The Foo's are the gateway band for the next generation (not sure what letter of the alphabet that is). They are the band every 13 year old first turns too when they are on the cusp of realising there is more to music than the Top 40. Easy listening with just enough edge and cred to ease the transition into some harder sounding stuff.

Everyone remembers their first, it always maintains a slight rosy coloured special sheen, and it's why a decade later grown up kids get misty eyed when 'Monkey Wrench' suddenly appears on a shuffle playlist. It's why record companies are cynically smart enough to release a Greatest Hits album just before stockings must be stuffed in time for Christmas.

While the obligatory two new songs tacked on the end - 'Wheels' and 'Word Forward' won't make it to 'Greatest Hits Vol. 2', the CD serves its purpose as you find yourself discovering or dusting off their old albums.

Video: Ministry of Sound's raunchy new tune MusicFIX Blog by Sam Nov 18 2009 4:01PM Aah, another Ministry of Sound song, another raunchy video clip.

Titled 'aNYway', the track is by Ducksauce and appears to be influenced by the Patrick Swayze/Demi Moore classic Ghost — if Ghost was, like, 100 times sexier. (I don't recall Patrick slipping his hand inside Demi's bra in the movie. Or the two of them crafting a huge penis-shaped thing out of clay. Hmmm...)

Check out the clip right here:
