For the first time in her career, Taylor Swift has had to cancel four US shows because of illness.

The 21-year-old became sick after performing in the rain in Boston on June 25 and apologised to fans for her croaky voice six days later at a concert in Knoxville.

The following day she had no choice but to pull out of a concert in Louisville, Kentucky, and she's since cancelled three more shows in North Carolina and Atlanta after doctors diagnosed her with bronchitis.

"I would never cancel if I were physically able to perform these shows," she said in a statement.

Since February Taylor has been on a gruelling tour of 98 shows in 17 countries to promote her album 'Speak Now'.

She's now resting at her home in Nashville and hoping to return to the tour on July 14.
